8th SECEMU CONFERENCE

Spanish Association for the Conservation and Research of Bats

8th SECEMU CONFERENCE: Murcia (5th and 6th December 2021)

SECEMU, Spanish Association for the Conservation and Research of Bats, is the pioneering Spanish organisation in these fields, which currently brings together researchers and stakeholders of the world of chiropterans, not only from Spain but also from Andorra, Gibraltar and Portugal. In 1992, the first conference of the organisation was held with the aim of bringing together all those interested in the research and protection of this group of Iberian mammals, and to promote the exchange of information and experiences among the participants. This activity has been organised every two years for the last decade.

The Southeast Naturalist Association (ANSE), a member of SECEMU, offered during the SECEMU Annual General Meeting, held in Zaragoza in November 2019, to organise the next conference. A proposal that was immediately joined by the Asociación Meles, an NGO focused on the research and conservation of nature based in Alhama de Murcia.

ANSE is developing throughout 2020 and 2021 a project called Conservation status and assessment of the Long-fingered (Myotis capaccinii) in the Iberian SE, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Government of Spain. Particularly, the organisation of a technical conference was one of the programs of this project. It seemed therefore appropriate to take advantage of the 8th SECEMU Conference to include a monographic session on this species. Technicians and researchers currently working with this species in Spain were invited.

The current worldwide health crisis, an unforeseen event that was not predicted when these conferences began to develop, made it necessary to include a guest lecture on bats and emerging zoonoses. As the impact on their image and conservation is being jeopardised by the unsubstantiated news circulating in the media and social networks all over the world.

It is our hope that this conference will serve as a continuation for the activities that SECEMU started back in 1989, and will fulfil the same objectives set for the first conference held in 1992. We look forward to your attendance. See you in Alhama de Murcia.
